If you've shopped for needlepoint, you've probably seen the phrase "hand-painted" and wondered what you're really paying for. Here's the honest answer — what it is, how it's made, and why so many stitchers won't go back to anything else.
Hand-painted means painted, one square at a time
A hand-painted (or "stitch-painted") needlepoint canvas has its design applied by hand, directly onto the mesh, so that each individual square of canvas shows the exact colour you should stitch there. There's no chart to follow and no guesswork — you simply stitch the colour that's already under your needle.
Because a person paints each one, no two canvases are ever perfectly identical. Small, lovely variations are part of the craft — you're getting a piece of hand-made art, not a print run.
Hand-painted vs. printed canvases
Printed canvases are made by machine, stamping the design onto the mesh. They're cheaper, but the colour often doesn't line up cleanly with the holes, which means more guessing and a less crisp finish. Hand-painted canvases cost more because they take real time and skill — and it shows in how they stitch up.
